Bicyclists and pedestrians are in serious danger in San Jose

A reader of the San Jose Mercury News had a question for the paper. They’d heard that, in 2018, there were more pedestrian and bicyclist deaths than homicides in the city. Was that true?

Not quite, the paper’s response explained, but the reality wasn’t much better. It was a tie. That year, 27 people died as a result of homicide, and 27 bicyclists and pedestrians were killed in accidents.

A deeper look at the numbers

There are a handful of groups that track statistics related to pedestrian and bicycle crashes in San Jose. One of them is California Walks, which in 2019 told a legislative committee that while the population of San Jose rose about 10% over the previous decade, traffic fatalities during that time jumped 37%. In 2018 specifically, pedestrians accounted for just under half of all traffic deaths in San Jose.

Pedestrians and cyclists aren’t always killed in collisions, however. Many end up with injuries, some severe or even life-altering. The Mercury News said the city averages about 600 crashes a year that involve a cyclist or pedestrian and result in an injury.

Those injuries could include:

  • Broken bones
  • Skull fracture
  • A traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Spinal damage
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Internal injuries

Drivers are often inattentive and not paying attention these days. Unfortunately, pedestrians and bicyclists often pay the price.

If you or a loved one was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured or killed, there may be legal options to receive financial compensation. Life will never quite be the same as before the crash – but knowing you may not have to worry about the cost of medical bills or lost work time can offer some peace of mind.
